  • polis: fundamental political unit, made up of a city and the surrounding countryside (ex. Baltimore and Baltimore county)
  • monarchy: rule by a single person
  • aristocracy: rule by a small group of noble, very rich, landowning families
  • oligarchy: wealthy groups who are dissatisfied with the aristocrats, also rich, decide to overthrow the aristocrats with military help
  • tyrant: powerful individual who seized control by appealing to the common people for support 
  • during the sixth and seventh century BC, aristocrats mainly controlled all of Greece
  • Athens went through power struggles, so Athenians moved towards a democracy
  • citizens participated in political decision making directly
  • a nobleman named Draco took power in 621 BC, and he create a system that said all Athenians were equal under the law, no matter their social class
  • in 594 BC a king named Solon outlawed slavery
  • he organized Athens into four groups based on wealth
  • all citizens could participate in Athenian assembly
  • any citizens could bring charges against someone else
  • in 500 BC, Cleisthenes separated people by where they lived rather than wealth
  • allowed all citizens to submit laws for debate
  • council members were chosen at random
  • only free adult males who owned land or property were considered Athenian citizens
  • mainly sons of wealthy families received an education
  • studied reading, grammar, poetry, history, math, music, logic, athletics, and public speaking
  • when they got older, they were sent to military school
  • Athenian girls didnt go to school, but they were educated at home by their mother
  • they learned about child-rearing, weaving cloth, preparing meals, managing the household, and other skills 
  • some women learned to read and write
