1. For each term, write a sentence explaining its significance:
- direct democracy: this allowed citizens to have a direct input on the choices by the government

3. What steps did Pericles take to strengthen democracy in Athens?
Pericles made it so that anyone could be able to hold public office. Prior to this change, only wealthy citizens could afford to hold office, because none of the wealthy people were paid salaries. They had enough money that they didn't need to work. Pericles increased the number of public officials who were paid salaries.
4. What were the battle strategies of Athens and Sparta in the Peloponnesian War?
Athens tried to avoid land battles and use their strong navy as an advantage against Sparta. The Spartans burnt the Athenian food supply. Pericles blocked off Athens and had food imported, but they ended up spreading a plague around.
5. Why do you think some Athenians found the ideas of Socrates so disturbing?
